As wildfires raged out of control, thousands of residents evacuated their homes with little time to take personal belongings. USLegal CEO Frank D. Edens says maintaining a file of important legal papers should be part of everyone's emergency preparedness plans.
"We are saddened by the devastation in California and hope that families will be able to quickly restore their lives. The wildfires serve as a reminder to all of us to keep important legal documents in a grab-and-go format," said Edens.
Among the papers that Edens recommends keeping handy are financial records, titles, deeds, and insurance polices. He also says individuals should prepare will, living will, and power of attorney forms.
USLegal, Inc. has been keenly aware of natural disasters and crisis situations that the nation has faced in recent years and has developed free legal resources to educate the public on the importance of legal planning. In 2007, the Company launched its LegalLife Resource Center with checklists and planning tools on its flagship Web site, USLegalForms.com. See http://www.uslegalforms.com/legallife/.
USLegalForms.com has also posted a free guide to creating a Life Documents File to help individuals restore lost or destroyed legal documents. The guide was developed to help victims of Hurricane Katrina and can be utilized by those who have lost important papers in the California fires. See http://www.uslegalforms.com/life-documents.htm.
"We are pleased to offer these resources as a public service. If you take time to prepare, complete, and organize your legal documents ahead of time, it can make the recovery process easier after any disaster," Edens said.

Law and Legal Definitions
Arson and Possession of Explosives Law and Legal Definition
Intentional wrongful setting of fires and possession of explosives is governed by state criminal laws, which vary by state. Federal laws also govern possession of explosives, such as on an airplane. Arson is committed when a person intentionally damages a building by starting or maintaining a fire or causing an explosion. The arsonist's knowledge or suspicion that a person may occupy the building when it is on fire will heighten the seriousness of the charge. Arson may be committed by an act of recklessness which results in a fire.
An explosive is any chemical compound or mechanical mixture that is commonly used or intended for the purpose of producing an explosion and which contains any oxidizing and combustive units or other ingredients in such proportions, quantities or packing that an ignition by fire, by friction, by concussion, by detonator or by chemical action of any part of the compound or mixture may cause a sudden generation of highly heated gases that the resulting gaseous pressures are capable of producing destructive effects on nearby objects or of destroying life or limb.
