But sometimes, people desire to change their name for personal or business reasons. U.S. Legal Forms offers a cost affordable way for individuals who desire to legally change their name to get the right paperwork to begin the process.
"The need for a legal name change may result from marriage, divorce, adoption, or simply the desire to have another name," said U.S. Legal Forms CEO Frank D. Edens.
In some states, usage or just taking on another name as your own has the affect of making it your name. A marriage certificate also serves as proof of a name change. However, Edens says the best way to legally change your name is to file a petition and to obtain a court order approving your name change.
Sometimes name changes aren't allowed. A court won't approve a name change if it is being done in attempt to avoid judgments, debts, or legal actions. Courts also frown upon name changes that might infringe on the rights of others like famous people.
After an individual goes through the process of obtaining a court approved name change, it is recommended to revise identification records such as social security card, driver's license, passport, voter's registration, credit cards, and insurance policies. Prepared legal documents such as will, health care directives and power of attorney should be updated too.

Law and Legal Definitions
What is a Notary Public?
A notary public is an officer authorized by the state in which the person resides to administer oaths, acknowledge signatures, certify documents and to take depositions (if the notary is also a court reporter). A notary requires proper identifying documentation before affixing his/her signature and seal of office to any document. The appointment, qualification, duties, powers, and liabilities of notaries are defined and regulated in detail by statute in the various jurisdictions.
Statutes of some states also authorize "commissioners of deeds" or "commissioners of the state." These are officers whose powers and duties are similar to those of notaries, but are additionally authorized to attest or certify deeds and other writings executed outside the state.
